Sexy Halloween

I wanted to do a proper post about Halloween and the array of ‘sexy’ outfits out there. However, due to being ill, I didn’t get around to it. Instead, I’ll share with you some of the fantastic posts on the topic I’ve been reading elsewhere. These are mostly US-based sites and apply to costumes for sale over there.

The first one is brilliant because it shows the sheer ridiculousness of some of the ‘sexy’ costumes. I mean, ‘sexy Nemo’? He’s a fish! Or Scrabble? I could comment on all of them because they’re all mad. Just go see for yourself on Jezebel.

Jezebel have also done a great post putting together the history and concept of the sexy Halloween outfit which is interesting reading.

The always brilliant Sociological Images did a number of brilliant posts on Halloween in general, both in gender terms and cultural appropriation terms - the latter sparking huge debate and some really interesting discussions.

This post compares costumes for men and women. All the women’s versions are sexy - sexy convicts, or camo cuties - as opposed to the straight-forward men’s versions. Interestingly they point out that the men’s ones come in one size, whereas the women’s come in three.

This one is more infuriating as it shows the gendered kids costumes. All the boys ones are professions or action adventurers. The girls ones are domestic and pretty roles. Although this one allows you to dress your daughter in a sexy ‘little black dress’ if you’re so inclined. 

Finally, this post links to a site which gently mocks the sexy halloween outfits, at least in theory. I’m not sure that ‘sexy hungry man’s dinner’ is actually that much worse than the ‘sexy remote control’ in the Jezebel piece above!
